WHAT DOES “IIFYM” MEAN? (IF IT FITS YOUR MACROS)

584

IIFYM, have you heard about it? It’s been gaining lots of public attention lately. It basically means you can eat anything you want, only if it fits into your calorie requirements split of protein, carbohydrates and fats. So basically if you ate oatmeal and apples compared to candy and french fries for you choice of carbohydrates, this will make zero difference at all in improving body composition. Gaining weight is caused by consuming too much calories, food choices are irreverent.

IIFYM

The concept of clean vs dirty foods only exists on a health standpoint. When you are on a diet, don’t think you have to cut out certain foods to reach your body composition goals. IIFYM states that losing weight is all about caloric and macro nutrient control. Your allowed to hit your numbers with any food choices you want.

EXAMPLE IIFYM SCENARIO:

590 calories, 40g protein, 40g carbohydrates and 30g fats derived from chicken breast, salmon, and caroots

Is equal to:

590 calories, 40g protein, 40g carbohydrates and 30g fats derived from a big mac

Macro nutrient targets were:

Protein = 200g

Carbohydrates = 250g

Fats = 60g

And you hit these numbers through eating a big mac, its fine.

I STILL HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING IIFYM
Think it about this way, you consumed:

– 5000 Calories from apples and

– 5000 Calories from potato chips

In both instances, you would gain the same amount of weight. The only difference is apples are healthier. You will possibly see an increase in
cholesterol and health issues from eating all those potato chips.

BUT HOLD ON
This isn’t an excuse to eat whatever you want as most people interpret it. You should always consume healthier foods. IIFYM basically lets you eat like a human being, just remember moderation is key.  Meeting your macros and calorie requirements is what equals results.

Apply common sense and base your diet mostly around good healthy nutritious foods, health is also just as important. To learn more about dieting tips, check out this article.
